The Thread About All Things Macross
1 Attachment(s)
I figured we could have one thread on all things Macross on Blu-ray.
I just ordered Frontier disc 6 because I've watched the first two episodes and found it to be very good. I hope to get the original one day, but I don't feel like I'm missing much, watching Frontier.
As for Plus, I'm thinking of just getting the Italian Dynit release soon. The Japanese release does have subs (EDIT: only on the movie!), but the price is just so darn high for four episodes.
Naiera | 07-12-2016 03:20 AM |
By the way, I didn't create this thread with farting in Harmony Gold's general direction in mind. I wanted a thread dedicated to we unfortunate westerners seeking solutions to watching Macross on Blu-ray.
Soon, I should be able to supply full subtitles for Frontier, in both fancy .ass form for computer-watching and such, and simple .srt for use with, for example, an Oppo BD player like mine. It's kind of finicky and doesn't like fancy formatting.

I really regret not getting that Japanese Macross Plus boxset from a few years back.

I hate Harmony Gold. That is all.

I'm super happy I got the subbed Macross Frontier set with the art books a few months ago.
IdeaOfEvil | 07-12-2016 05:14 AM |
I got the Macross Plus release, and while there are English subs they aren't that great. The dub is okay, but it is a mid-90's voice over that's kinda generic.

What a coincidence, since I just got a new blu-ray player and made it region free I decided to see how my old Do You Remember Love R2 DVD looks on my 4K big screen. Surprisingly it looked really good, only in the quick motion scenes did it have problems. Got to love how well the Japanese author they're discs. I'll try it on my plasma later since that handles motion more smoothly.
NLScavenger | 07-12-2016 08:46 AM |
^While the Japanese do seem to be able to author good discs, the 2016 Macross DYRL Blu-ray is not one of those. When I watched it I noticed a few moments in which the encoder couldn't seem to handle the grain.

To soften the blow, it's technically four episodes and a movie compiling those four episodes. ;)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Macross is pricey, but so worth it. It's my goal next year to get the original series on Blu-ray and perhaps Delta too if vol 1, 4 and 7 still come with storage boxes.
Naiera | 07-12-2016 01:12 PM |
I'm not interested in compilation movies ;) I don't think I have a single one, actually.

The set with the two movies. The movies aren't a compilation, but a different take on the Frontier series with heavy alterations.
StefaanD | 07-12-2016 02:14 PM |
Guess he means the Shudista set with the 2 compilation movies. Zrdb loves to talk in riddles ;)

For my first post in this thread, I'll just say that Do You Remember Love is one of the most gorgeously animated films of all time.

I know about that one. It wasn't clear that's what he meant, though ;)

The Macross Plus Movie Edition is actually a different take on the material rather than a straight compilation, and it contains new scenes, animation tweaks, and a new song. I tend to favor the first three OVA episodes, but the movie has a stronger conclusion.
The Blu-ray box wasn't that expensive when it came out, but it was a limited edition that went OOP.
I wasn't aware that the 2016 Macross: DYRL Blu-ray has PQ issues. I have the previous BD, and aside from some shots that are out of focus (and the censored gore), I'm happy with it.

I was exaggerating a bit about the compression issues. I gave the disc a second spin just now and while there are some compression issues, they weren't that very bad or noticeable, especially in motion and with the grain on screen. The most concerning PQ issue IMO isn't the compression, but the use of sharpening to "fix" some of the out of focus scenes, but I can live with that.

I can't find the quote right now, but I'm sure it was in something like an old issue of Animerica where Shoji Kawamori stated that the movie version is not only his preferred version but what he wanted to do to begin with. He wanted a movie from the drop but had to make the OVA version instead for some reason. I know Wikipedia states that Keiko Nobumoto wrote it as a film which then evolved into an OVA, but the entry doesn't have any sources cited there. Still, it's not a standard compilation film.

I really gotta get caught up on Macross Delta. I think I'm afraid I'll hate it, and I don't like hating Macross.
In other news I might also be importing Macross 30 for PS3 soon, apparently the gameplay isn't too English-unfriendly.
cicada88 | 07-13-2016 01:14 AM |
I was thinking about importing Do You Remember Love from Japan, but the comments in this thread make me a bit wary.
Is there any hint of a new version on the horizon in Japan?
Naiera | 07-13-2016 02:11 AM |
Why would they release it twice in one year?

There was an uncensored release in January and I doubt there will be a new remaster so soon. It's for sure a somewhat flawed remaster and the compression could've been a bit better at times, but I think it still looks decent overall, and there is a good selection of audio options (original mono, stereo, 5.1).

I kinda have a love-hate relationship with Delta. There have been some moments in which I started hating Delta, but thus far Delta has managed to win me back every time.

Unfortunately, looks like the JP DVD or even LD is the way to go for the uncensored version. So, so, stupid Shoji. All this does is push sales away and invite people to just pirate it.

Only the 2012 blu-ray is censored. The 2016 blu-ray is uncensored.

I'd heard that the scenes/shots themselves were still a little blurry though? Seems like they've been compromised either way. Like they re-edited bad upscales back into those scenes

I believe some cels were unfortunately out of focus when they were originally photographed. There's nothing that can be done short of reanimating those shots. From what I understand, the 2016 Blu-ray tried to fix those shots somewhat by adding sharpening, but there's only so much that can be done if the original film is that way.
Jim Purcell | 07-14-2016 08:35 PM |
I'm about five episodes into Delta now, and it's not as painful as I feared. It's still a bit on the 7 side of the spectrum, and the cgi seems really lackluster from a big deal mecha anime in 2016. But overall it's pretty good.
But what I do like is this show seems to be focusing on a wide mix of protoculture derived races across the galaxy. Not just humans and Zentradi. Showing that life is both common and somewhat varied across the universe.
In fact the main romance angle seems between a human and two aliens. I think that's a new triangle for the franchise.
I'm definitely in for the rest of the series.

That's what I have read here and there but of course back in the day nobody noticed on CRTs. I have seen before/after shots, I forget where, between this one and the previous and the sharpening is easy to spot but yea only so much you can do with originals that are already out of focus. Still, the 2016 release is worth purchasing.

I think it's been getting slowly better over time, but I was also not so sure of it when it started. I really didn't want an "idol anime" and the mecha seem to be devolving into plain fighter jets now.

I'll always lament that the Macross Plus movie wasn't completely reanimated. It supposedly follows the original script more closely but it does have that compilation movie pacingit's impossible to avoid when culling scenes from a series.
Shame the subs on the BD are so bonkers. I'll keep hoping somebody does the series and movie justice...but until then, I'll keep hugging my Japanese BD set.

Macross Delta volume 1 is coming out this week, and its release is being advertised in Akihabara on billboards:

Perfect timing with this thread. I just received this yesterday from YAJ after a long wait. I managed to finally snag it for a semi-reasonable price considering its OOP status.

I'd be interested to know as well. Looking at those pics of that set made my mouth water. I took a peak at eBay and nearly had a stroke. Though what left me truly disgusted was the clown trying to rip people off by selling burned bootlegs.
